Gay Marriage Solution

Aside from the fact that by actively supporting legislation which defines marriage as only between 1 man and 1 woman, that the LDS Church is not only contradicting it past prophets who taught and practiced polygamy (and incidentally preached that monogamy was a pernicious evil that would destroy our nation), I had another idea this morning...

Advocates of taking away the right for same sex couple to be married want to have the state enforce such rules.

So their goal appears to be state controlled marriage.

The problem is that which mormon temple ceremonies, the ceremony is done in a private location, and attendance is restricted to a very specific group of people.

If Mormons want the state to control marriage, doesn't it make sense that marriage would have to be performed in such a location where there performance could in fact be monitored and regulated by the state?

  1. See, there you go trying to apply logic, reasoning, and, well, thinking to this problem. Dontcha remember what happens when the prophet speaks?

  2. Ah, but if I could apply a little apologetic strategy to this one...

Neither the prophet, nor any of his councilors nor the 12 prefaced their statements regarding same sex marriage with...

    "Thus sayeth the Lord..."

So technically, it's just their opinions that they're sharing. :-)

  3. And don't let a BYU Devotional talk by Ezra Benson entitled "15 Fundamentals of Following the Prophet" fool you into thinking that revelation doesn't have to be prefaced by something like "Thus saith the Lord" (Point 6). There is no scriptural directive to back that up, just anecdotal allusions.
