Financing Mistakes

Over the course of my lifetime, my financial contributions to the LDS Church are probably in the realm of $50,000. That's a freaking lot of money!! And it doesn't take into account the cost of my self-supported 2 year mission, or those that I brought into the Church during that mission and their financial contributions since...

Switching tacks, a story out of Portland, Oregon this morning, discusses an jury award to a victim of molestation by a Scout leader. As part of that award of $1.4 million and because of their involvement, the LDS Church gets to pony up $350,000.

Actually they already paid this last year as part of a settlement - perhaps to try and avoid any bad PR about the case.

The thing that bothers me, is that donations, giving to the organization by it's members under the guise of rendering a fair tithe to God, are used to take care of legal problems faced because of incompetent leadership - either due to lack of training, good ol' boys crap or something similar.

At least the victim is getting some compensation for his injuries, and if the Church wasn't spending the money on him, I guess that's just more money they could spend expanding their corporate empire...

  1. I'm right there with you Koda...way too much money spent. After filing my federal and state taxes today, I think I'll file for a tithing refund?

  2. I agree, it's really disturbing to think of how much tithing I've paid over the years. For the first time ever, we didn't pay any tithing last year. It was so great!
