Self Indulgence

To begin this post off, I'd ask that you allow me a moment of self indulgence...

I'm African, born and raised, and occasionally my heart still aches to return.

There is a scene in Blood Diamond (Not a spoiler) where the main character talks about finding a large diamond and leaving Africa and all her problems behind. The man to whom he is speaking picks up a handful of red dirt from the ground and tells Danny Archer that he can't leave, because the dirt is in his blood and in his skin. There is some definite truth to that.

Anyway, right now is one of those occasions when my heart aches to return home.

The following is a music video by a group called Johhny Clegg and Savuka. I may post more on Mr. Clegg in the future since he is a remarkable man. The song is a tribute to a departed close friend and former member of the band, and talks about Crossing Over to the other side.

  2. Thank you for listening!! The story behind that particular song is fairly moving as well, and then having attended a couple of Zulu funerals and understanding more about their particular spiritual beliefs makes it even more so.

The longing for home... it's an interesting feeling. Kind of a mix between missing the place I grew up and all associated with that. And then being grateful that I live where I live now, and the opportunities it offers my family, but then still wanting the opportunity to share my upbringing with my kids...

I had a little exchange with another ex-South African over on Facebook yesterday as well, and so it seems to definitely be a normal emotion to experience.
