Son of a ....

Was the phrase which was emitted from my mouth as I stepped on the scale this morning. The numbers were bad enough, but add to that the fact that I am pretty dehydrated, and I'd just gotten out the shower, which generally makes my hydration numbers look better than they actually are.

Since Ironman almost 2 months ago, I've gained 8 pounds (and if you factor in the hydration issue, that number is likely closer to 10 or 12).

I haven't been feeling good. I've been eating garbage, slacking on my workouts, and it's starting to affect my moods and all of that too.

Add to this the fact that I'm worried about financial issues, got some mild paranoia going on as I distance myself further from Mormonism, and am feeling the need to try and reconcile stuff with my parents.

And on top of all of that I haven't been sleeping well for a while now. Which may be partly related to the awful dietary choices and lack of exercise, but there are some other factors there outside of my control as well.

I think the numbers on the scale this morning were the final straw. It's time for things to change.

1. I'm going to give up donuts for a month.

2. I'm going to be setting up my training plans for the two half iron distance races this year, and my one marathon over the next 2 days.

3. I'm going to try the protein shakes for breakfast and lunch thing for a week or two as well, to try and get the weight gain under control.

4. I'm going to clean my home office this weekend too. I've been watching videos from The Happiness Project, and I think a great deal of my stress may be coming from a disorganized work-space and clutter.

I'll keep you posted on how all of this goes!

  1. White carbs are the devil. It's faddish to say so, but it seems to be true.

I've been dropping weight by reducing my non-hungry eating and by filling my meals with vegetables and more healthy stuff.

I am not a dietician. Anecdotal experience only. Good luck.

  2. You could try what I do; just don’t check the scale:D Kidding!!! I think I’m getting to the point where I’m ready to start trying to lose weight, so we can suffer together. Weight is a frustrating issue, good luck!

  3. Daniel, I'm not sure it's a fad, or just common knowledge now... I've had issues with Hypoglycemia as well in the past - usually related to my weight, and the simple carbs seem to set it off... Unfortunately I rely on them for training, so it's kind of a tough trade off!

Kaleidoscope Eyed Girl... Why is it some much easier to add the pounds than take them off?! I've gone from my lowest weight in 3 years (Actually about 12) to my highest in 3 years... It doesn't seem like much, until I pick up a 10 pound plate at the gym and imagine running with it, and then I realize why I feel the way I do after my runs the last week or so.

  4. Well, I'm no success story yet, but since dragging myself (kicking and screaming!) to Weight Watchers, I've been pretty impressed with their online stuff. I have to pay for it, but it lets me keep track of what I eat online and how many "point" it is. Also has tons of recipes and ideas for simple snacks (my downfall), etc. And there's nothing you can't eat (you just have to make up for the extra calories somewhere else).

For my whole life I was always too THIN, so this middle-aged flab sneaking up on me over 3-4 years was quite the surprise. Also surprising was that I couldn't just skip cookies for a day or two and watch it melt off. Still hoping it's some sort of bad virus that will eventually go away, cuz I like my cookies! ; )

  5. Koda, I thought you were a young guy. I'm having the same frustrating weight issues, but I thought it was because I'm old.

  6. Thanks Rock!

I guess I'm fairly young - mid 30's or so. My metabolism did start putting on the breaks about 15 years ago, but unfortunately I can't blame my recent problems on that. It's more a case of lousy choices.

I've gone from doing endurance training for 20-30 hours a week to a perhaps 2 or 3 if I'm lucky, and yet I'm still eating the same. I suspect the 7 donuts I had on Sunday/Monday last week put me over the top - hence the no donuts for a month plan.

Clink... My mother-in-law has been doing weight-watchers. She's dropped over 100 pounds and has gone from needing the little handicap carts at the store to walking 3-5 miles without too much trouble. I think logging your food and controlling portions are the keys to WW success. Good luck!
