Alright... I know the intelligence level of the readers of this blog is likely fairly high, and therefore I call upon your collective wisdom and expertise for a problem I think I may be facing...
I spent 6 or so years employed by the Corporation of the Presiding Bishop of the CoJCoLDS. Which I thought was a cool thing to have on my resume at one time.
A few weeks back, I sent my resume off to an associate I've gotten to know on Twitter for a possible position in New York. Mrs. Koda and I have actually seriously considered the prospect of exploring life closer to the Big Apple, hence the sending off of the resume when the opportunity arose.
Anyway, there has been absolutely no response since I sent it off, and I suspect that my employment history may have be partially or wholly to blame... In every other interaction I've had with this person, the response has been almost instantaneous.
So here's the question...
How do I include my work for the LDS Church on my resume, without flagging myself as a Mormon - I would say because it's not because I'm ashamed, but to be honest, in the wake of Prop 8, I am, and what self-respecting, progressive individual (the type I would likely be seeking for employment with) would give me even a second glance with that on my resume.
Here are some things I've been considering, and I'd appreciate any feedback or alternative suggestions...
1. Simply putting Non-profit Organization
2. Non-profit Religious Organization
3. ABC Division for Global NPO
4. ABC Division
The goal is to try and eliminate the potential for discrimination, while at the same time, gaining credit for the work done, because I did some pretty fine work while I was there - we're talking $1 mil plus in saving due to design changes I implemented and that kind of thing.
Or, if you're looking for a talented Java/PHP developer, you live on the East Coast of the US - or even Australia, New Zealand and possibly Europe, and you'd be willing to look past my employment with the LDS Church, feel free to let me know as well!!

ReplyDeleteThanks Clink!! And yes please!!
ReplyDeleteeek! a conundrum to be sure. Could you put a note of some sort next to the job description saying that you have since left the Mormon church due to your disgust/disapproval of the church's involvement with Prop 8, amongst other reasons. It gets messy but it is honest and may even work in your favour making you an even more desirable candidate for employment ?? (p.s. I hope you get work in Australia!)
ReplyDeleteThanks Maureen... I have considered a note... But I worry that I'd come off as some bitter ex-member (Which is only the case on a couple of days out of the month ;-) )
ReplyDeleteClink did offer some excellent advise in the FB message... Outside of Utah, California and very Mormon (pro and anti) focused groups, Prop 8 is likely a non issue and she is of the opinion that generally Mormon people are looked upon favorably in the business community (Clink is not affiliated with the LDS Church, not now, and not in the past, so I think the opinion is far more objective, than my paranoid suspicions!)
Australia... I'd love it too - the hang ups are going to be finding a company that wants me bad enough to be willing to fly me and the fam out, and then me either finding the drugs, or the mental fortitude to face a cross pacific plane trip, with 5 exuberant kids!
