Fast forward to Monday morning of this week, and the main headline in a Salt Lake City appears as:
Chaffetz’s biggest donors: Unions
I don't presume to know why this was a leading headline, but I have two theories...
Theory Number 1, Mr. Chaffetz just thumbed his nose at the GOP and voted against war funding. The GOP is all about war and increasing spending, and so politically, this may not have been the best move.
The interesting thing, is that cutting spending is the platform he ran on, and for the true tea party folks - Not the Palin worshipping morons - this is actually a good move by him.
The thing is though, that the Tea Party Folks, GOP devotees, and I would suspect even the Palin worshipping morons of the world, all hear union, and instantly think about communism and all the evil in the world combined into a single organization.
So, associate Mr. Chaffetz with unions is like a death sentence for him, at least when his voting base are all the right wing folks.
Theory Number 2, Mr. Chaffetz is being challenged by a nominee from the Democratic Party. And perhaps his challenger saw this as a great opportunity to capitalize on a window of possible discontent with Mr. Chaffetz within his party... First he wants to kill soldiers, and now he's a union puppet?!?
I think given that the Salt Lake Tribune traditionally leans left - or rather left for Utah - Theory 2 is probably more likely, but I must admit when I saw the headline, the first thing I thought was... Oooops Mr. Chaffetz, that's what happens when you thumb your nose at your Conservative masters!!
I don't really like either theory though. If it was 1, then the Repubs are the scum bags - but we already knew that. And if it's 2, then the Dems are the scumbags - which even though I like them, they likely are too.
I'm just not a fan of dirty politics, no matter who is doing it.
