I have 14 days to review the service, and then I'll start paying $9 a month or something for it...
In case you didn't know, I'm somewhat of a cheap bastard, and so within seconds of downloading "Linchpin", I had the membership canceled.
I'm feeling a little guilty doing that, especially now that I'm listening to the book, but... I am planning on keeping the book on my Christmas list, and mentioned to Mrs Koda that I would really like it.
He just said something about Walmart.
He talked about how research has shown that Walmart damages communities where it sets up shop, but then talked about how people don't care because they can purchase a jar of pickles the size of a VW Bug for $3.
It's not quite that cheap, but it's a valid point. I would much rather shop at Smiths. Their store is cleaner, they have great customer service and I like the attitude in general.
Unfortunately though, struggling financially, means that we have to shop around, and overall, we can get more food, cheaper at Wally World.
I faced this dilemma on Sunday too...
I needed some paper plates for a dinner we were putting together.
So I'm standing in the aisle, and they has 150 polystyrene plates for a buck or two...
Even the 50 packs of paper plates were more expensive, and those looked pretty flimsy.
I got the polystyrene ones, because they were just so much cheaper, but I felt guilty, knowing that they environmental impact is higher than with paper.
It's tough trying to do the right thing. I'd love to have the money to buy organic stuff, cook only with fresh ingredients and shun the mass produced crap that has become part of the American Dream.
But with 5 kids, a single income, and limited opportunity to increase that income, those decisions are hard.
I'm interested to see where Mr. Godin goes in his book.
Mrs. Koda also mentioned that the guest on the Colbert Report last night covered a similar topic - specifically the plight of the middle class.
Think I need to watch that too... But my employer has blocked access to his video feed.
I'll try and post it below....

Yes.
ReplyDeleteThat's all.
Money's awfully tight with me in my situation. I've chosen to stop buying free range eggs and organic milk. I feel awful about it, but what can I do? I've already cut lots of expenses. I don't have internet at home. I switched to a cheaper phone plan. I don't remember the last time I bought new clothes or got a haircut. No alcohol or eating out. I've cut off my book-buying habit. Until I can increase my income, part of my diet will come from overworked cows and chickens.
ReplyDeleteI know exactly what you mean, UK. The other day I went to Whole Foods and purchased organic apples, some organic veggies, grass fed beef, and coconut milk for our breakfast shakes.
ReplyDeleteThen I stopped at Walmart on my way home to pick up some wild bird seed (since we put out our feeders a few weeks ago we've become the bird kingdom's equivalent of the KoolAid House -- and they are eating us out of house and home), bulk ketchup, and a half gallon of our fav coffee creamer. : /
